Bleach Wash 14.2oz Japanese Selvedge Denim Five-Pocket Jeans

Drake’s began as a neckwear maker in London in 1977. Over the decades it has built a reputation for working at the edge of what British tailoring and casual dressing can mean — producing pieces that reward long-term ownership over short-term novelty. These jeans, like everything Drake’s makes, are designed to be kept.

The denim is woven in Okayama, Japan, on an extremely rare shuttle loom. Shuttle looms are slower and more demanding than modern projectile looms, but the cloth they produce has a character no machine-woven denim can replicate: a selvedge edge, a slight irregularity of weave, and a weight — 14.2 ounces — that holds its shape and fades properly over time. The cotton is dyed with natural indigo before weaving.

The bleach wash is applied after construction. It draws down the indigo to a pale, faded blue — the kind of colour a well-worn pair of selvedge jeans achieves gradually over years of washing and wearing. The bleach process also softens the hand of the cloth, so the jeans feel broken in from the first wear.

Drake’s jeans fit true to size, with a higher rise than most — sitting at the natural waist rather than the hip. Relaxed through the thighs, tapered at the hem. The selvedge edge runs along the outseam and is visible when the hem is turned up.
