Untold Stories is a painting of a building that could only exist in imagination — a library or bookshop that has grown upward without limit, stacking floor upon floor of warm, book-filled rooms into an impossible architectural whole. The viewpoint is frontal and slightly dizzying: the building fills the composition from edge to edge, with no sky and no ground. Every window is lit from within — warm amber and gold — and through every arch you can see bookshelves, reading lamps, figures half-glimpsed, the accumulated atmosphere of a life spent with books.

The palette is deliberately restricted and warm: deep forest green for the architecture, burnt amber and golden yellow for the light within, rich brown and ochre for the bookshelves themselves. The darkness of the building’s exterior throws the lit interiors into relief, so that the composition seems to glow. Gold leaf has been hand-applied to the architectural details — balcony railings, decorative mouldings, the points where interior light meets structure. The gold is substantial on the finished piece, with real texture and weight; it catches the light of the room it hangs in, adding a dimension that cannot be photographed accurately.

Because the gold leaf is applied individually to each example, the finishing varies between pieces — in placement, in density, in the way the leaf has settled. Each one is unique. The piece is signed by the artist. It suits the kind of interior in which books are taken seriously: a study, a reading room, or a sitting room wall where it can be the first thing you see.

A study or reading room is the most obvious home — and the most rewarding. Also strong in a sitting room where it can be seen from the favourite chair, or a hallway where it creates depth and warmth in a narrow space. The amber palette suits rooms with bookshelves, natural wood, leather, and warm lamplight rather than cool overhead light: the gold leaf responds to warmer sources. An oak frame works well; so does a dark walnut or a slim black frame. Companions: ceramics in amber and green, table lamps with warm bulbs, gathered books, objects from second-hand shops and markets.
